Tamil superstar Rajini will compensate distributors of his film ‘Kuselan’, which did not fare well at the box office, to the tune of Rs.10 crores, sources close to the actor said.
A spokesman for the distribution company Pyramid Saimira, which is showing the film across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, said the movie had so far collected Rs.21 crores. He was confident of ‘Kuselan’ covering the costs of Rs.60 crores before being taken off theatres.
The company, however, was noncommittal about accepting the compensation.
While the star did not charge any fee from the Tamil producer and his mentor K. Balachander, the Telugu version’s producers had paid Rajnikant a fee of Rs.10crore.
The movie icon had Friday recommended several cuts to improve the collections of the movie.
The matinee idol had extended a similar courtesy after one of his earlier films ‘Baba’ ran into huge losses.

After all the opening hype and controversy -starrer Kuselan is struggling at the box-office. The movie, which opened to full houses, has already seen a huge drop in collections. But it seems it may not be entirely rajini’s fault.
Theatres in Chennai, which are known for Rajini mania, no longer display a housefull board.
Kuselan has already seen a 50 per cent drop in collections. Such a drop is something unusual because usually a Rajini movie is a virtual guarantee for success in the first few weeks.
Most moviegoers rue that Kuselan is not about .
“Sivaji was completely about Rajini so we cannot compare that with Kuselan. Here he only has a guest role,” an ardent Rajini fan said.
While the super star plays only a guest role, Kuselan was hyped like a full length Rajinikant film and that many believe led to too many expectations. Making it worse for the distributors was the fact that Kuselan was sold at prices that rivaled Rajinikant’s superhit Sivaji.
The lukewarm response at the box-office is already bringing back memories of Rajini’s 2002 flop Baba. Then the superstar even paid back distributors for their losses but Kuselan may not be his fault entirely.
The producer and the distributors are desperately hoping that the film would pick up in the next few days, at least in smaller towns and rural areas. But for the moment, a shaky Kuselan looks nothing like a superstar’s superhit film.
One of the film stars who is shining for almost three generations is our superstar but, in his latest film Kuselan which proved to be a flop is a shoc to all thalaivar fans. All of them are saying that Rajni’s spell on his fans is fading. No that is not the case only director P. Vasu’s directing skills are fading. His thinking capacity and innovation have disappeared. He is no more fit to be a director. His generation and his tastes have gone and this is a new genre of people expecting every film to be different. He cannot shine in this generation. So it is high time that he quits from cinema. Being a die hard thalaivar fan i was terribly disappointed with this film. Not even a singlr frame in this film was fit to be applauded. From the start to end the film is full of critics. No one has a scope to perform in this film. The only satisfactory is VAdivelu’s comedy. I do know why superstar accepted this project. After doing a stunner like Shivaji he cannot do this kind of a film which is totally not made for him. Music in this film is sure to be applauded. That’s all about the film. I think superstar has accepted this film to find his old friend BalaKrishnan. That may be the only reason i can think of as to why superstar acted in this film. Anyway lets expect the same old thalaivar in the upcoming “Robo”.
Rajnikanth has lost it once again.
Following my review from Thursday show, trade analyists are reporting that his latest release, Kuselan, has opened to a dismal 40-50% all over Tamil Nadu. This is indeed a huge shocker in comparison to Sottaji and Chappamukhi, Kanth’s earlier releases back in 2007 and 2005 respectively.
A remake of Malayalam Blockbuster, Katha Parayumbol, the film had first been noticed by the people thanks to the marketer’s poor planning. First and foremost, the film had not stuck to Sreenivasan’s script as it was only revolved around Rajni and Rajni only. In the original, Mammooty’s role was short and sweet and didn’t involve any questions or punch dialogues regarding his life on politics, cinema, etc. Also, the film was to be about Pasupati (Sreenivasan in the original) and his struggles, not mindless songs by G.V Prakash about Cinema Cinema, etc. That’s where the theme is lost. But then again, it’s Tamil Nadu, where part of it’s population highly regards of Rajni as their god, but really, he isn’t.
Toss in the Begging to put all ends to the Hogenakkal controversy by kanth himself and there you end up with red faces in the form of the Nadigar Sangam. At the same time, Mixed reports are coming in from all centres (including it’s Telugu version, Katha Nayakudu) saying that Rajni disappoints big time while some fans of the original are saying that
The original version was with some emotional touch. It was from “Srinivasan “point of view..not mammotty..but here ..[they] added masala.. like anythng .spoiled the core point of the movie..sucks to [the] Core..
In the meantime, Kamal Hassan’s Dasavathaaram had celebrated it’s 50 days of release yesterday with it’s increase in shows yesterdays in the likes of theaters Sathyam, Mayajaal over Kuselan’s shows. At the same time, the advance bookings were purely empty
Bottom line: Sivaji may have become the biggest hit but Kuselan is becoming the biggest flop. This is P.Vasu’s next flop in a roll after Thottal Poo Malarum, Krishnaarjuna (with Nagarjuna as Guest Role, irony!) and Maharadhi (with joker star, Balakrishna).
